Some of the reasons for the popularity of social networking sites are, first is the opportunity to meet new people, second is, they are user-friendly and the last one is, they are free to use.

But, the main drawback of chat rooms was that you may not know the person with whom you are interacting with. These sites mostly make their money through advertisements. Other ways these sites make money is through extra features like games and other applications which should be paid by the users.
